Home Bred Farm

SITUATED ON AN 11.5 ACRE FARM, the home – with an implied sense of a restored or renovated barn but also representing the aesthetic of traditional Main Line Philadelphia residences – is a careful balance between rustic comfort, modern amenities and traditional construction. The timber frame construction of the central mass of the house allows for an expansive and open gathering space for entertaining. Rough sawn Douglas fir timbers and reclaimed wood floor add a natural warmth to the Great Room reminiscent of a barn. A large wrap-around porch at the rear of the house provides both visual and physical links between the indoors and outdoors. Providing an expansive area for outdoor entertaining, the covered porch features a fireplace, patio, pizza oven, and an inground pool.

An additional project at Home Bred Farm included the design of a private gymnasium. Featuring a NCAA regulation size court, the program for the facility also includes an exercise loft, locker room and bathroom, a full kitchen, and bleachers.  The gym is regularly used for basketball, volleyball and athletic/weight training. Fitting of its location on the family’s farm, the exterior of the gymnasium is designed to look like an equestrian barn. To help conceal the mass of the structure, the barn is built into a hillside and additionally relies upon a front facade specifically designed to achieve the goal of minimizing visual impact and the overall scale.  Constructed using a steel truss system, the gym is clad in board and batten siding with a metal roof to reinforce the barn vernacular.
