About

Archer & Buchanan Architecture is a custom architectural design firm whose work strives to meet the needs of sophisticated clients who value a collaborative design process, attention to detail and quality construction.

Since its inception in 1996, Archer & Buchanan has been recognized for its exceptional residential projects including new homes, additions and renovations, historic restorations, country property planning and equestrian facilities.  As the firm has grown, so has its breadth of work, which now includes college and university, library and other institutional projects.

The partners of the firm have an understanding of and strong appreciation for the rich tradition and history of Philadelphia, its historic suburbs and rural surroundings.  They strive to preserve the local heritage by designing buildings that will continue to enrich one of the most beautiful and historic areas of the country. They are practitioners of all styles, though much of their work draws inspiration from the extraordinary turn-of-the-century homes design by Mellor, Meigs and Howe; Walter Durham; R. Brognard Okie; and Wilson Eyre.

The firm’s philosophy begins with the belief that buildings will be inhabited for a century or more and should continue to gain character, beauty and value as the years pass and history is created.

Archer & Buchanan Architecture understands that when clients endeavor to create a building they are making an enormous commitment of time and money in what is expected to be a valuable and productive investment.

We believe a prime responsibility is to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us. This task includes: adherence to budget; respect for time and schedule; and the prudent and productive use of land, labor, and materials.

Our designs should enhance the environment while increasing in value to the owner over time.

Strive to Preserve
Section Content:

Although we design in a broad range of traditional and contemporary styles, we respect the rich traditions and history of Philadelphia, its historic suburbs and rural surroundings. The many historical precedents inform our efforts to preserve and enhance the local heritage by designing buildings that will continue to enrich one of the most beautiful and historic areas of our country.

We begin with the notion that buildings will be inhabited for a century or more and should continue to gain character, beauty and value as time goes on.

The firm’s work draws inspiration from the many wonderful, turn-of-the-20th-century homes designed by Mellor, Meigs and Howe; Walter Dunham; William Price; R. Brognard Okie; Wallace and Warner and others who created the splendor of that period.
