Red Clay Farm in Chester County is a classic homestead with a 18th century four-bay stone house and quite large timber-framed cattle bank barn. The challenge was to convert these rustic and crumbling buildings into a home for contemporary living at a very high standard without spoiling the essential qualities of an antique handmade farm nor disrupting the cultural landscape surrounding it.
Both the house and barn were carefully documented, stripped of accumulated later 20th century additions and then deconstructed to their shells. New foundations, structures, thermal and mechanical controls, communications and entertainment technology were discreetly embedded within the reconstruction to create a seamless restoration capturing the look of the property as it appeared in its agricultural heyday of the 1920’s.
