The diminutive 18th century Pyle House and 1888 bank barn are the backdrop for artist Clayton and Starr Bright’s home and sculpture studio. The challenge was linking the two buildings as a vibrant mix of old and new architecture that was neither disrespectful of, nor slavish to, the earlier buildings. Permission was granted to remain close to the road, leaving the valley untouched. To the north the house is closed to the busy road with tall garden walls while to the south it is dramatically opened to views and light. The contrast of old and new forms, materials and details reveals the history of the farm and the owners’ passion for sculptural expression.
